PROGRAM OF STUDY
Purpose
To educate human resources who are able to interpret and apply their knowledge of Materials Chemistry, particularly focusing on the synthesis and characterization of new materials (vitreous, ceramic, inorganic, polymeric, molecular materials) through different techniques and the assessment of its potential application. The major in Materials Chemistry intends to relate the UANL research advances on materials to the technology development of our country, guiding such development to meet the needs of society for new high quality materials that are effective and have detailed specifications on their application areas.
Approach
The graduate studies in Materials Chemistry aims at developing and innovating new materials through synthesis, characterization, and application, seeking to improve their structural or functional properties: electricity, catalysis, magnetism, or optics.
Skills
Applicants to the major in Materials Chemistry must be professionals in related areas of knowledge with basic skills of verbal and mathematical reasoning, speaking, and writing. They have integrating abilities in critical thinking, self-directed learning, innovation, and experiments, with a marked sense of responsibility, discipline, and respect for the environment. Additionally, they possess basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and physical chemistry.
Labor Market
In our country, mainly in its northeastern region, industries of glass, ceramic, cement, polymers, and functional coatings, among others, require professionals who are highly qualified in materials chemistry. The skills acquired during these graduate studies will provide the ability to work in academia, research, and industrial development.
Social Significance
Our Graduate School seeks to educate high-level human resources for globalization, where the skills in materials chemistry gives the opportunity to engage in academia, research and industrial development, guiding such development to meet the needs of society for new high quality materials that are effective and have detailed specifications on their application areas.
Continuing Professional Development
As part of our program, graduate students are advised to take research courses or perform as a visiting researcher at other national and international institutions, in order to help improve the scientific quality of research. Furthermore, the UANL School of Chemistry offers a doctorate in the same knowledge area, which allows to possess better qualifications.
Operational Hazard
Graduate students must meet all safety standards and regulations while working in laboratories on the experiments of their thesis to avoid any risks.
Specific Requirements
Applicants must have related undergraduate studies and a minimum GPA of 80 out of 100. They must complete an application form and deliver the necessary documents at the Office of Student Services of our School of Graduate Studies, as well as fulfilling the enrollment requirements and complying with the entrance provisions of the UANL General Regulations of Graduate Studies and the School of Chemistry Internal Regulations.
Applicant must pass the mandatory tests: the General Knowledge Test (EXANI III, Spanish acronym), the English Proficiency Test (EXCI, Spanish acronym), the Specific Knowledge Test, a psychometric test, and an interview. For any special case, the Master Degree Committee will determine whether applicants are admitted or rejected.
